VIDI NMS

Open Media Management Platform

The VIDI NMS is a vendor-neutral “Open Media Management Platform” for monitoring and controlling devices, networks and workflows in media and telecommunications environments. It supports the management of media networks, service planning, operational monitoring and alarm management.

Its modular architecture – a base module plus several optional add-on modules – allows it to be tailored to each use case and customer requirement. Networks ranging from a handful of monitored devices to complex worldwide media networks with thousands of devices, automatic provisioning and various interfaces to subordinate systems or supplementary booking tools can often be rolled out within a few weeks.

Modern broadcast and telecommunications networks are highly dynamic – technologies, standards and requirements change constantly. That is why a high-performance network management system needs one thing above all: maximum flexibility.

From the outset, VIDI’s requirements for an NMS were clearly defined: vendor-independent, modular and scalable, powerful and intuitive to operate. Combined with a robust server-client architecture, open APIs and flexible automation and scripting functions, the result is a platform that adapts without compromise to complex network environments.

Because the market in 2010 offered no solution that met our technological standards, VIDI developed its own network management system entirely in-house. Today the VIDI NMS forms the central foundation of our Network Operations Center in Darmstadt and is also successfully in use at customer sites.

A decisive advantage: all of our software development takes place in Darmstadt, right next to the VIDI NOC. As a result, operational experience, real-time feedback and concrete requirements feed directly into the continuous development of the platform.

Device View

Topology View

Display of how devices are arranged and interconnected within a network.

  • OpenStreetMap integration

API / North Bound Interface

Interface for integrating the VIDI NMS into other software tools.

  • Connects the NMS to external software tools such as umbrella fault management or third-party scheduling tools
  • Supports reading and writing of parameters and configuration in the VIDI NMS by third-party software
  • The VIDI NMS can also act as the leading system and write into other systems

Redundancy Package

For a parallel installation of the VIDI NMS providing 1:1 redundancy.

  • Automatic failover protection in the event of NMS hardware or software failures
  • Continuous mirroring of all data from the main system to the backup system
  • Automatic takeover by the backup system in case of failure, including all parameters set in the network and on the devices
  • Hardware and operating system are not included in this package

Circuit Provisioning

The basis for automated switching of connections within the network – “flow management”.

  • Create, visualise and analyse data flows in the network
  • Resource allocation for bandwidth and port usage
  • Management of pools for VLAN/MAC/IP addresses

X/Y Panel

Soft panel for entering switching commands – intuitive and with minimal effort.

Scheduler

For automated switching of circuits or connections according to a predefined schedule.

  • Calendar for planning switching operations with automatic activation and deactivation
  • Planning and programming switching operations in advance to increase reliability and avoid errors
  • Graphical display of events on the timeline
  • Retrospective view also possible, for correlation with traps and alarms

Performance Monitoring

Enables a wide range of network parameters to be recorded, exported and visualised.

  • Collect, export and visualise performance data
  • Visualisation of network or device state changes over time
  • Correlation of network or device state changes with SNMP traps and other data

Web Booking Module

For direct access to the NMS by external users to place bookings.

  • Booking of customers’ own media and data services within the network by external customers
  • Integration into the customer billing system for automatic invoice generation
  • Self-administration of customer-owned services within the network

Alarm Manager

Alarms are triggered and actions initiated based on defined events in the network.

  • Define alarms, for example based on threshold values
  • Interact with alarms, for example commenting or acknowledging
  • Trigger actions based on alarms (sound, e-mail, CLI scripts, device configuration …)

SNMP Trap Manager

For recording and displaying SNMP traps.

  • Correlation of traps with sites, devices, ports and services
  • Export of traps for further external processing
  • Use of various filter and sorting options

Advanced User Access Manager

Enables individual access management for users or user groups.

  • Create and manage access restrictions for users or user groups (for example companies)
  • Display parts of the network for specific users or user classes, down to device or service level
  • Definition of multiple access levels (admin, user, guest)

Syslog Receiver

For recording and displaying syslog messages.

  • Correlation of syslog messages with sites or devices
  • Export of syslog messages for further external processing
  • Use of various filter and sorting options
